About Us

The Full Story:

The New Hampshire Breastfeeding Task Force is a charitable, non-profit, 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to protect, promote and support breastfeeding through education, outreach and advocacy. The Taskforce includes a 49 member multidisciplinary team with representation of all ten counties in the state.

Apr 1997

Established NH Breastfeeding Task Force Statement.

Aug 1997

Published and distributed NH Breastfeeding Resource Guide

Developed Breastfeeding Proclamation for World Breastfeeding Week and signed by Governor Jeanne Shaheen.

Jan 1998

Designed and distributed a NH Breastfeeding Promotion poster and postcards to increase the visual imagery of breastfeeding in our state.

Sept 1998

Developed and distributed educational pamphlet: A Guide for Breastfeeding in the Early Weeks for breastfeeding mothers. Later revised in 2011.

June 1999

Assisted in the language of Breastfeeding Bill (HB 441) and provided supportive testimony to House and Senate legislators.

HB 441 legislation protects a women's right to breastfeed her child in public and was signed into law by Governor Jeanne Shaheen on June 10, 1999.

May 2000

First annual presentation of NH Breastfeeding Award(s) to hospitals or individuals in recognition of the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding within their communities.

Aug 2000

Presented an informational training on Worksite Support for the Breastfeeding Employee: A Guide for Business with invitations sent to 700 New Hampshire businesses.

May 2002

New Hampshire's Breastfeeding Task Force's Inaugural Breastfeeding Conference.

May 2002

Developed and distributed educational pamphlet: The Pacifier Decision: A guide for parents, to assist parents in making an informed decision regarding pacifier use for their breastfed baby.

Sponsors NHBFTF Annual Breastfeeding Conference for professionals and collaborates teaching session(s) for medical students and residents at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

May 2005

Collaborated with NH AWHONN to provide "Train the Trainer" breastfeeding education program for health care professionals.

Apr 2006

Developed and distributed educational pamphlet: Providing Breastmilk for Your Hospitalized Infant.

Developed and distributed an educational module: A Breastfeeding Friendly Approach to Depression in New Mother's: A Curriculum & Resource Guide for Health Care Providers.

June 2010

The NH Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding Project (a committee of the Task Force) has conducted two statewide collaborative breastfeeding workshops and has target education efforts to help all hospitals improve levels of evidence-based in-hospital breastfeeding efforts (2010-2014). With CDC/ASTHO funding, the project has developed an Online Breastfeeding Curriculum with 15 nursing contact hours and provided Prenatal Provider Education in 15 outpatient settings, along with other onsite clinical education and support (2015-2016). 

June 2013

First annual presentation of NH Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Award(s) in recognition of NH Businesses' who support breastfeeding employees in the workplace.

June 2014

First annual presentation of NH Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare Award(s) to NH licensed childcare programs that actively support and encourage breastfeeding mothers and babies in a child care setting that is Breastfeeding Friendly.

Aug 2014

Task Force officially became a New Hampshire non-profit organization ( 501 (c) (3) on August 17, 2014, continuing its educational mission of promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding in our state.

Apr 2016

Task Force became an Approved Provider Unit of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) and can independently award nursing contact hours for educational events.

June 2016

The Ten Steps project facilitated all New Hampshire Maternity Hospitals (19 total) in becoming "Bag-Free" prohibiting the distribution of formula company diaper bags to new parents.

Aug 2016

NHBFTF Poster presentation entitled: New Hampshire Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding Collaborative Statewide Quality Improvement Initiative was presented at the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) Conference in Arlington, VA.

Jan 2017

The Task Force is a standing member on the Governor's Advisory Council on Lactation, charged with examining the state of breastfeeding protection and support in NH to provide information to the Governor and legislature to improve breastfeeding in NH.

Jan 2018

The Task Force in partnership with Keene State College developed a Breastfeeding Support in the Workplace: Resource Toolkit. This Employer Training Module for Workplace Lactation Support is available for viewing or download here.

Feb 2018

Designed a new NHBFTF Logo, Banner, and Rack Card to increase public awareness of the educational mission of the NHBFTF and to provide breastfeeding information for families, healthcare providers, communities and employers.
